Corfu - part of the group of islands known as the Ionian Islands, is a very popular travel destination and is an island that offers a unique setting for your holidays in Greece.

With the picturesque old town of Corfu and it's impression Venetian influence and charm, to the soft sandy beaches found along the coast, the island is one that has everything you could need for a fun filled and enjoyable holiday.

Corfu was frequent mentioned throughout Greek mythology. The name of Corfu ( Kerkyra ) comes from the nymph Korkira, who was the daughter of Asopus the river-god. Poseidon, the god of the sea, fell in love with her and kidnapped her and brought her to the island.

Throughout the years, Corfu has played an important role in the history of Greece, and today is one of the most beautiful of all islands in the Ionian, and a place where the influence of the Venetian period can be seen firsthand.

The old town of Corfu is a must-see, and here you can enjoy walks along the narrow winding roads and enjoy the many Venetian buildings that are found all over the town. With the impressive old fortress, the town has a real charm and character about it, and this will be evident from the moment you arrive in the town.

Some of the other highlights of the old town include the central square of Spiniada, the magical Mandouki neighbourhood, the Palace of Saint Michael and Georges and the Ionian Academy.

For those who enjoy the beach, there are many lovely beaches all over the island, such as Kassiopi, Sidari, Ipsos, Nissaki, Paleokastritsa and many others. The beaches here on Corfu are very beautiful and during the summer months are filled with visitors enjoying the crystal blue waters of the Ionian sea.

The village of Palaiokastritsa is one of the most beautiful and impressive in Corfu, as well as being one of the most famous. Situated approximately 26km from the town of Corfu, the village is located in a very beautiful part of the island with a unique landscape of big hills. It is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

One of the most important and impressive sights on Corfu is "Achillion", the beautiful palace located close to the village of Gastouri, which was built in 1891 by Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria. The main theme of the Palace was based around the Achilles, the Trojan hero that Elisabeth so truly admired, whom the palace was named after. During the Second World War, the palace was used as a headquarters and hospital. It became public property at the end of the war, and today can be visited by all members of the public. Inside the palace you can see the wonderful paintings and artifacts and possessions of the Empress.  

The island is filled with wonderful monuments to years gone by, and perfectly combines the old with the new. It is an island with a great infrastructure for tourism, and  attracts huge numbers of visitors on a yearly basis.
