Corfu was frequent mentioned throughout Greek mythology. The name of Corfu ( Kerkyra ) comes from the nymph Korkira, who was the daughter of Asopus the river-god. Poseidon, the god of the sea, fell in love with her and kidnapped her and brought her to the island.

The village of Palaiokastritsa is one of the most beautiful and impressive in Corfu, as well as being one of the most famous. Situated approximately 26km from the town of Corfu, the village is located in a very beautiful part of the island with a unique landscape of big hills. It is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
One of the most important and impressive sights on Corfu is "Achillion", the beautiful palace located close to the village of Gastouri, which was built in 1891 by Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria. The main theme of the Palace was based around the Achilles, the Trojan hero that Elisabeth so truly admired, whom the palace was named after. During the Second World War, the palace was used as a headquarters and hospital. It became public property at the end of the war, and today can be visited by all members of the public. Inside the palace you can see the wonderful paintings and artifacts and possessions of the Empress.
The island is filled with wonderful monuments to years gone by, and perfectly combines the old with the new.
